For founders who live in Morocco

Start a US LLC from Morocco

Stripe does not serve businesses in Morocco, so many founders look at a US LLC to sell abroad. Morocco's exchange control is strict about residents holding assets abroad, so check that side first.

Important: Moroccan residents generally need Office des Changes authorization to hold assets abroad, which can include a stake in a foreign company. Check this before you form or fund a US LLC.

Why a US LLC

Why Moroccan founders form a US LLC

Stripe is not available

Morocco is not on Stripe's list of supported countries. A US LLC with an EIN and a US bank account can apply for a US Stripe account.

Invoice in dollars

US clients pay a US company in USD by ACH or card, without an international wire.

Sell on US platforms

Amazon.com, Shopify Payments and US app stores pay out to a US company with a US bank account.

One company for global sales

Clients in Europe, the Gulf and the US can all pay one US company.

A treaty with the US

Morocco and the US have an income tax treaty that helps settle which country may tax what. It does not remove Moroccan tax.

Getting paid from Morocco

Stripe's global availability page does not list Morocco, and Shopify Payments is not available to Moroccan businesses either.

PayPal accounts in Morocco can receive payments and withdraw them in dirhams through local partners: to an Attijariwafa Bank account, a service that started in 2014, and since September 2025 instantly through the Cash Plus app, a payment institution licensed by Bank Al-Maghrib.

A US LLC with an EIN and a US bank account can apply for a US Stripe account and PayPal Business as a US company. Whether you may hold that company as a Moroccan resident is a separate question, covered below.

Exchange control: assets abroad need approval

Morocco's foreign exchange rules are set by the Office des Changes in its General Instruction on Exchange Operations (IGOC); the 2026 edition applies since 1 January 2026. For resident individuals, building up assets abroad remains subject to Office des Changes authorization. The exceptions named for individuals are narrow, such as employee share plans in a foreign parent company.

Companies are treated differently. Moroccan companies may invest abroad within yearly ceilings, and startups certified by the Digital Development Agency up to MAD 10 million a year. That route is for a Moroccan company, not for you personally.

In 2020 Morocco ran a one-off regularization for residents with undeclared assets abroad, which shows how seriously the rule is taken. Talk to your bank and an expert-comptable, and if needed the Office des Changes, before you form or fund a US LLC.

Moroccan tax

Individuals whose tax residence is in Morocco are subject to income tax on their worldwide income. Profit from a US company that you own and run from Morocco is part of that picture; how it is taxed is a question for an expert-comptable.

Getting paid in Morocco

Services you provide to clients abroad count as exports of services, which the Office des Changes monitors. Residents who receive foreign-source income may open a foreign currency or convertible dirham account and keep part of the repatriated amounts in it. Keep invoices and contracts for every payment.

The US side is the same for everyone

Where you live does not change the US part. It is done online, without travelling, without a US address and without an SSN.

  1. Choose a state: Wyoming or New Mexico for low running costs, Delaware if you plan to raise money from investors.
  2. The formation document is filed with a registered agent in that state, within 48 hours.
  3. The EIN is requested from the IRS as soon as the state approves. No SSN or ITIN is needed.
  4. You get the operating agreement that banks and payment providers ask for.
  5. With those documents you apply for a US business bank account, for example at Mercury.
  6. Every year: the registered agent, the state's annual report where there is one, and Form 5472 for a single-member LLC owned by a foreign person.

Which state?

With no people or premises in the US you can choose any state. Most founders abroad choose on yearly cost and speed.

Morocco FAQ

Questions from Moroccan founders

Can a Moroccan resident own a US LLC?

The US side has no citizenship or residency requirement. On the Moroccan side, holding assets abroad generally needs Office des Changes authorization, so check with your bank, an expert-comptable or the Office des Changes first.

Is it different for Moroccans living abroad?

Yes. The residents' rules follow your tax residence, not your passport. A Moroccan whose tax residence is abroad (MRE) is treated differently, while a Moroccan tax resident with a foreign residence card is still a resident.

Can I receive PayPal payments in Morocco?

Yes. PayPal accounts in Morocco can receive payments and withdraw them in dirhams to Attijariwafa Bank or through the Cash Plus app.

Does the Morocco-US tax treaty mean I pay no tax?

No. The treaty helps decide which country may tax which income and gives relief from double tax. As a Moroccan tax resident you are still taxed on your worldwide income.
